On Monday, May 20th, 7 Riverview students participated in the State Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) competition held at Penn State University in State College, Pa. PJAS allows students to complete scientific laboratory experiments and STEM-related investigations under the guidance of a teacher mentor. Students then present their results to a panel of scientists and engineers who evaluate the quality of the student's work. The following students presented projects at the competition.
Name | Grade | Category | Project Title |
Elise Bear | 8 | Chemistry | Fuel Combustion Investigation |
Bianca Chen | 8 | Chemistry | Investigating Antacid Effectiveness |
Natalie Kingera | 8 | Chemistry | Investigating Chemiluminescence |
Ruby LaBelle | 8 | Chemistry | The Effect of Sugar on SCOBY Size |
Grace Landis | 8 | Physics | Investigating Sand Batteries |
Nick Penkrot | 9 | Botany | How Seed Age Affects Germination by Oxygen Consumed |
Rocco Brown | 10 | Physics | Calculating Light Speed in Different Salt Concentrations |
We are extremely pleased to announce that all seven students earned First Awards for their projects at the state level, even with higher expectations from the judges. Congratulations to the Riverview participants for their hard work and dedication to their research over the past year!
