On Sunday, March 24, 62 Riverview students participated in the regional contest of the annual National History Day Competition at the Heinz Regional History Center. The competition requires students to complete individual or group projects that fit a national theme.
This year's theme is Turning Points in History. Students can choose to write a historical paper, present a performance, or create a website, documentary, or exhibit. Riverview entered 30 projects into the competition and 13 of those projects (29 total students) were recognized with awards and have the opportunity to participate in the state competition at the University of Scranton on the weekend of April 20 -21.
The winning students and their projects are listed below:
Noah Hunter and Miles Sigal won first place for their documentary titled "How World War II Set Back French Film."
Juliette Brun, Hannah Hudack, and Ryland Ogrodowski won first place for their performance titled "The Treaty that Built Europe"
Grace Johnson and Rosa Lascola won first place for their website titles "Oh, my daughter, I wish you were a boy!"
Nick Penkrot won first place for his performance titled "Mendel and the Peas: How Genetics Changed History"
Aicha Jaafar won first place for her paper titled "Bly in Blackwell's: A Turning Point for Mental Health and Journalism
Isabel Chaparro, Lana Lynch, and Siddaly Sykes won second place for their exhibit titled "The Tet Offensive"
Ayden Fichte, Seeley Lippert, and Oden Rebarchak won second place for their performance titled "A Tour through Pearly Rosebuds and Carnations: How Frankenstein Gave Life to the Romantic World"
Lilly Murphy won third place for her paper titled "How the Plague of Athens Turned the Tide of War"
Sophie Meyers won third place for her exhibit titled "From Protests to Pride: The Stonewall Riots"
Catie Hoolahan and Blake Huffman won third place for their website titled "Frelsi: Fighting for Equality in Iceland"
Sophia Gagetta, Cara Johnson, and Aliyah Lookabaugh won third place for their performance titled "Tears of Gold: A Tudor Tragedy"
Carson Bodnar, Nico Lascola, Kieran Pisoni, and Michael Woodrow won third place for their exhibit titled "Sputnik 1: The Satellite that Started it All"
Rocco Brown, Emily Chen, and Clare Sliben won third place for their documentary titled "Smith v Allwright: The Fight for Voting Rights"
