Students from Mr. Biehl’s Civics class were invited to the Verona Borough Walk Audit. They walked to College Avenue in Oakmont and returned to debrief at the starting point, taking notes about their experience. This exercise was to gather feedback regarding the VOPP (Verona, Oakmont, Plum and Penn Hills) Trail. This is a 14-mile proposed trail that is aimed to connect the four towns through trails via town parks. The purpose was to analyze the viaduct and brainstorm ideas to make the overpass safe, especially as it relates to the proposed trail. There was broad participation from the community, including Senator Jay Costa, County Councilman Nick Futules, and Representative Joe McAndrew, amongst others. Riverview students did a great job taking notes, and many of them participated in the debriefing session thereafter.
