Checkmate! Riverview Holds Annual Junior High School Chess Tournament

On Wednesday, Jan. 19, Riverview hosted its annual junior high chess tournament with nine 7th graders and sixteen 8th graders participating.

Noah Hunter defeated Max Orbin to win the 7th grade competition, with Owen Metz placing 3rd, and Sidney Vespi in 4th place.  The 8th grade tournament was one of the most competitive in years, and featured Tatum Grimes coming from behind to defeat Ryan Hower in their semifinal match, and then moving on to beat Braden Longstreth in the finals.

Tatum was this year’s champion, followed by Braden Longstreth in 2nd place, Ryan Hower in 3rd, and Korbin Cooper in 4th.

In fact, all four of these could have been champions in other years, and even the consolation bracket was filled with talented players, as 8th grade  appears to be one of the best chess playing groups at Riverview in a long time.

The top players will now move on to compete against other nearby schools in the Northern Area Chess Championship, to be held virtually in the month of February.

Well done! you all make Riverview Proud!
