3rd Grade

As a task to meet the needs of measurement difficulties we created a graham cracker engineering assignment. Students were given the dimensions of graham crackers in inches (5 by 2 1/2) and in centimeters (13 by 6 1/2). Using centimeter and inch grid paper the students had to measure to create graham cracker templates (at least 6 crackers in both centimeters and inches). After measuring and cutting the templates the students could work freely building the paper form of their graham cracker house. After success in a paper construction, students had to create a material list to provide the teachers (so we knew how much to purchase). Then came the construction phase! At the time of building the students had to report how many whole, 1/2 and 1/4 rectangle cracker pieces were needed. The students also had to determine the needs of the roof and stability factors as they began to build. After the frame and roof were completed, we let the structures dry. Then onto the exterior decorating! You will notice that we recycled old candy from Halloween as well as using newly donated and purchased candies! To complete the project, students finished the project by writing a
how to, providing a reference for others if they would like to build a structure of this this type!
